Miniatures
During class the other night, I saw my instructor painting a portrait on, what looked to be, a 4×4″ canvas. It was really cool how she was knocking in little dabs of color to fully render a readable head. So tonight I sat in my kitchen with a Norman Rockwell book in one hand and my paint brush in the other and took a shot at it. His style of illustration lends itself to the type of heads that I would be able to copy at such a small size. Plus I believe Rockwell himself painted small portrait studies for a few of his pieces (not as versed on his paintings as I would like to be). I painted these using a single #2 bright and oil on polypropylene paper. I had fun, though it required a lot of concentration. As a note: it’s a good idea to take a lot breaks so you don’t become cross-eyed -had to learn this the hard way.
